Projects: When not completing commercial illustration assignments, Allen is creating paintings that depict animals in both a familiar and unexpected way. He often turns to folklore for the concepts of his work and distort size relationships, environments, or the animals themselves to create visions that are truly unique, while at the same time paying homage to animals' natural physical attributes and behaviors. He combines his affinity for nature with what he has been painting professionally for the past 25 years... fantasy illustration for the publishing and gaming industries. Description

I can supply a large print ready image when the time comes... just wanted the public version on the site to be low resolution. The back story for my image is set in the backwoods of Louisiana where a local cryptozoologist, Earl, is determined to capture a rumored swamp creature that has been described as part turtle and part dragon... and exhibits the grumpiest of attitudes. This monster has become known to locals as the "Bayou Bogger". After the Veil fell and the existence of the creature had been exposed, the elder voodoo witch of the bayou, Vaughra, cast protection spells upon it to protect it from the mundane humans who wish it harm. My painting depicts the Bogger lurking in its haunt surrounded by sunken and twisted trees, whose branches are tangled with the snag and grappling hooks that Earl has unsuccessfully cast in an effort to ensnare the beast, as it patiently waits for its next victim.
