Demeter, goddess of the harvest, was the central figure of the Eleusinian Mysteries that predated the Olympian pantheon. The mysteries celebrated the story of Demeter. The initiated were sworn to secrecy. Those who participated in the mysteries were forever changed for the better and no longer feared death.
